Looking For A Therapist?

Updated: Nov 9, 2018

Get ready because I am about to

GO. IN.

Lately, I've become the go-to person for folks within my community who are interested in therapy but have no clue where to start. And I love that! I'm going to share quite a few resources that could be very useful on your search. Let's dive in!

Open Path Collective

Open Path Collective is a non-profit platform where you can find affordable in-person sessions (although some of their therapists also offer remote video session as well!). This is a great option for folks who may be on a limited budget and/or are without insurance. All sessions are offered on a sliding scale of $30-$50 for individual sessions and between $30-$80 for couples and family session. No questions asked. Typical sessions can cost $80-200 or more out of pocket so this is truly a fantastic and accessible for most option.

P.S. There is a lifetime membership of $49.

Psychology Today

Psychology Today is a widely used platform that most therapists are using to connect with clients. This means, you'll find a ton of variety and options to choose from. But how do you navigate this site to find what you need? All good! I got you.

Go to "Find a Therapist" and you can insert your area code.

From there, on the left hand side you will see various filters that allows you to help narrow your search.

You can input the type of insurance you have, the issues you are experiencing, the language you are most comfortable having session in, what age range the therapist serves/specializes in, the types of therapy you are interested in and more.

I always recommend this site for people who are searching, especially if they have particular preferences in regards to their therapists specialties and abilities.

But Miracle, Girl, I need a Therapist of Color!

I feel you Boo. I GOT YOU TOO!

Therapy for Black Girls

Dr. Joy has blessed us with an incredible platform that is the gift that keeps on giving. If you head over to Therapy For Black Girls you can go to "Therapist Directory" then "Find A Therapist". You'll then be able to search by your state. Once you're there, you will see a list of therapist, their picture, profile, address, phone number and their website.

When you're searching, please make sure you are paying attention to their Fees & Insurance. Not all therapists take insurance and/or may not take your particular insurance. If you don't see it on their site, be sure to call or e-mail to find out.

P.S. Therapy for Black Girls is also a podcast! She covers topics from fertility, to mindfulness, and body image. It's a true gem, definitely give it a listen.

Cultural Therapy

Cultural Therapy offers therapy solutions for the culture. They provide a directory of affirming therapists because we matter.

Select "Find An Affirming Therapist" and you will be taken to a directory where you specify options such as profession (there are different categories of "therapists" depending on the licensure, we'll get into that later), insurance, and language.

They also offer resources such as "5 Things To Consider When Searching for a Therapist" that's worth a read.

Melanin and Mental Health

First, Melanin and Mental Health's Instagram page is glorious and will have you yelling "YESSSS". They drop gems all day long, get into it. Same thing here re: directory. You can find a Dope Therapist with ease.

They also offer a podcast called "Between Sessions" (as a therapist, this title is gold), where you'll be able to hear from Licensed Mental Health Professionals on topics such as "Mind Matter" and "Bring Your Best Self to This Vida".

They've also got a page full of resources and some pretty bomb merch you might want to check out!

Whew Chile! I'm tired.

I hope this was helpful! There will be more soon. Let me know if you try any of these resources and how it works out for you.

Take good care,

M
